Organized Youth for Educational Alternatives or OYEA for short, is an empowerment agency. Helping adults and Youth, through education, reach a point were their outside of what Walter Tippmann describes as the "Bewildered Herd" of uncritical thinkers and conformers that make up the majority of our country. While OYEA's focus is on student leadership and student voice in schools, we follow a set of distinguishers developed by the Alternative High School Initiative (AHSI) to assess schools and to help us incorporate our philosophy with the schools. The organizations within AHSI serve a diverse spectrum of students in communities around the country. While each school in the network tailors components of their programming to match the needs of the specific communities they serve, all AHSI schools share a set of key design elements. There is consensus amongst the participating organizations on a set of universal distinguishers that will be evident in all AHSI schools.
